The islanders asked one thing: leave us out of your victory laps
We need to talk about the one voice in this story that isn't a government, a taskforce or a disciplinary committee: the Falkland Islands themselves, whose statement said they were 'disappointed — though regrettably not surprised' to be conscripted into a celebration of 'a game that did not in any case involve the Falkland Islands'. Many islanders, they reminded everyone, still carry trauma from 1982, when more than 900 people died. The people closest to the wound asked, politely, to be left out of the choreography. That request deserves to lead every article.
Instead, the grown-ups piled in. The White House taskforce turned it into a first-amendment showcase. Downing Street turned it into a quip about ownership. A business secretary called it 'egregious'. Everyone found their angle; nobody found the islanders'.
The principle here is genuinely simple and genuinely worth defending: self-determination means the people who live somewhere decide their future — and their symbols don't get borrowed for stadium theatre by any side.
Fifa has rules about political displays and a precedent from 2024. Apply them evenly, and then — imagine this — a final on Sunday that's entirely about the football. The petition this week is short: ask the players, all players, everywhere, to let the game be the game. There is always a petition.
