The market's response is a précis of the species. Rent discounts of 30% in the cities, 50% elsewhere; vacancies of 500 days, 1,000 days, and beyond that a category where 'the concept of a price reduction just does not apply'. A house can now fail so thoroughly that arithmetic gives up on it.
So the owners hire ghost investigators — ¥88,000 a night for thermography and electromagnetic surveys proving an absence. And here is the detail to carry with you into the evening: even the investigator admits some properties produce 'various mysterious phenomena... consistently over a long period of more than a year'. The professionals hired to certify emptiness occasionally certify otherwise, and file it.
Death makes houses unusable; the country empties from the villages inward; and a man with a thermal camera sits awake until 6am, measuring the humidity of rooms where something happened. The houses will outlast us all, unoccupied on principle. Winter, as always, is unbothered — it moved in ages ago, rent-free.
