UK goes long chicken, short resilience. Check the feed exposure

was: “Poultry sector growth plan risks UK national security, campaigners warn

The UK's food security strategy is a leveraged long on poultry — and the leverage is the part nobody's pricing. Intensive chicken runs on imported feed: soy is 18% of the book, sourced from South America, exposed to shipping lanes, climate shocks and whatever geopolitics is doing this quarter. That's not food security. That's a carry trade with feathers.

The government's own risk disclosures are unusually candid: 'severe food price shocks' possible, ecosystem collapse flagged by national security officials, and Lavazza — LAVAZZA — guiding coffee prices high for years. When the espresso guys issue a profit warning about the planet, you read the footnotes.

The campaigners' counter-portfolio: pulses, legumes, nuts, beans. Domestic production, zero shipping risk, fixes its own nitrogen — the bean is a self-funding asset, the only protein with its own balance sheet. Chronically unfashionable, which is exactly where the returns live. Contrarian? The borlotti has been undervalued since the Bronze Age.

The play: long lentils, long polytunnels, long anyone who can build a reservoir, short single-source supply chains in a volatile world. My barber already grows runner beans. Up 40% on the season. NFA.
