The government's plan for food security is more chickens. The chickens' plan for food security is imported soy from South America — 18% of all animal feed, per the government's own national security assessment, which used the word 'unsustainable' and was then filed.
So: the island secures its food by building sheds full of birds fed by ships. The ships depend on supply chains. The supply chains depend on a climate and a geopolitics that are both, at time of writing, on fire. This is not a food system. It is a long extension cord plugged into the horizon.
The warnings are stacking up with unusual honesty: the farming roadmap concedes 'severe food price shocks' are possible; national security officials mention ecosystem collapse; even the coffee people say prices stay high for years. When the coffee people go dark, believe them.
A professor notes we are in a new world where events happen all the time. They do. They will. The beans, at least, ask for nothing. Plant the beans. Winter, as always, is unbothered.
