£130 back in your pocket AND the planet gets a hug!

was: “Andy Burnham considers radical shake-up to cut energy bills

Stop everything — Britain's new leader Andy Burnham is looking at plans to cut energy bills by £130 a year! That's £130 of pure possibility: a weekend away, a truly irresponsible amount of cheese, or — hear us out — a savings account with a NAME.

And it gets better! The plan, cooked up by the thinktank Nesta, would make running a heat pump cheaper than a gas boiler. Heat pumps! The little machines that warm your house by politely borrowing warmth from outside! What a time to be alive!

There's even a proposal to wipe out the entire backlog of consumer electricity debts — £2.7bn of worry, gone, for about 2 million households. Two million families sleeping better. You can't buy that. Well, technically you can, it costs £2.7bn, and someone might!

Yes, the whole package costs £3.2bn a year and someone mentioned the words 'tax rises' for autumn. But think of it as Britain treating itself. Britain deserves nice things. Another gift!
