Red fruit ranked; some redder than others

was: “‘Proof that delicious tomatoes can be grown in the UK’: the best supermarket vine tomatoes, tasted and rated

A journalist purchased eleven punnets of tomatoes, ate them methodically, and assigned them stars. The sweetest was sweet ('satisfying'), the wateriest was watery ('disappointing'), and the ones in the middle were in the middle. This is the supermarket taste test, a summer format as seasonal as the tomato itself, and it has reached its tomato week on schedule.

Findings, for the record: an Isle of Wight tomato won, a Sicilian tomato lost, and a device called a refractometer lent the exercise the aura of physics. The advice section counsels leaving tomatoes on the counter and keeping them out of the fridge, guidance that has been published annually since the invention of both the tomato and the fridge, and will be published again next year, and the year after, unto the end of salads.

Next week the format proceeds, per the closing link, to halloumi. The week after, presumably, to something else that squeaks.

The tomatoes, unaware of their rankings, will all be eaten regardless — the four-star and the one-star alike, in the same sandwiches, by the same nation. Nothing happened today. Correct. It scored a Brix of five.
